Description & Artist's Statement
"This piece explores the tension and intimacy between nature and humans through a surreal, symbolic encounter. The oversized bee—a creature often associated with collectivity, vulnerability, and ecological significance—faces the girl, who is rendered in a stark, stylized abstraction, almost mannequin-like. Her hair is spiked and white with grey undertones. Her features are both obscured and illuminated by synthetic elements: a red transluscent blind bisects her eyes, while a fluorescent yellow/green substance drips down her face like digitized tears or environmental fallout.
The detailed realism of the bee contrasts with the emotionally muted girl, suggesting a disconnect between human awareness and the natural world. Its body is richly layered with yellows, browns, and iridescent tones. The use of white pen and ink accentuates the fine hairs and segmentation.
The deep black background provides stark contrast, intensifying the focus on the two central subjects. I was inspired by the black velvet paintings of the 1960s & 70s, that glowed vivedly under black light.
Using a combination of high-flow acrylics, calligraphy ink, UV ink, and white pen, I aimed to create a visual language that feels both organic and alien.
