Description & Artist's Statement
"6th and Spring" is a mixed-media painting inspired by an elegant, arching branch I photographed hanging over the park on the corner of 6th Ave and Spring Street in New York City. I was struck by the graceful arc of that single branch — elegant, unbothered, and quietly holding its own in the midst of the city's constant movement.
Using high-flow acrylics, UV ink and paint, colored pencil, watercolor stick and white pen and ink, I translated that photo into a blend of botanical delicacy and urban tension. The background glows with warm ochres and soft yellows, like spring sunlight diffused through smog, but layered with florescent neon yellow. The sweeping, dark form suggests the branch — alive with tangled tendrils and trailing filaments — anchored by vibrant clusters of dot work in magenta, blue, white, and yellow.
To me, "6th and Spring" is about that unlikely cohabitation of nature and the city, softness and grit, chance and attention. It’s a reminder that some poetic images arrive unexpectedly — if you're looking up."
